World Class Recovery - Get Started!

Recovery is as important a component of progress and wellness as the training you put in. In this post, I am going to introduce some common types of recovery. In subsequent posts, I will describe some of these in more detail, and provide information on how best to implement them into your training and recovery.

First of all, the concept of “no pain, no gain” is not only outdated it’s completely WRONG. If your trainer puts you through a workout that results in more than some moderate muscle soreness (or, worse yet, ANY joint pain) you need to find another trainer. Immediately! But, with that said, good hard training does require incorporating some type of recovery.

There are, of course, many tools in the “recovery toolbox”. Rest is the most common recovery tool for a majority of people. But, it may not be the best tool. Cryotherapy, active recovery, heat, elevation, compression, yoga, naps (yes, naps!!) and massage are examples of good tools to have in your recovery toolbox. Each of these tools can be optimally effective when introduced into the recovery timeline appropriately. Generally speaking, for example, cryotherapy (e.g., ice bags or ice baths) are most effective when applied as close to post workout (or injury) as possible. Active recovery is generally best performed 24 - 72 hours after a heavy or rigorous training session. You must learn when and what type of recovery you need in order to optimize your progress - in other words get the most out of the effort you put into your training.

In my powerlifting endeavors, I have utilized all types of recovery. Currently, I am in the process of preparing for the 2019 WPC CanAm Powerlifting Championships, to be held Oct. 26-27 in Illinois. See my posts on Instagram (worldclasswellnessfitness) for some training videos, meet updates, and other information). So, I am currently incorporating all of the recovery tools listed above in order to perform at my optimum level!

Personally, I am a huge fan of massage therapy. Fortunately, I have found an awesome massage therapist right near here in Estero, FL. Her name is Maily (“Miley”) and she works at Fusion Yoga & Wellness. If you are in the area, you need to check her out. She does massage, Reiki, cupping, hot stones - the works. Find her at www.fusionyogawellness.com and (239) 498-8800.
